911: President George W. Bush Arrives at Offutt Air Force Base, 09/11/2001. | by The U.S Archives

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is a worth while read. It gives a good idea of what was happening aboard the plane after the attacks. The amount of uncertainty was huge, but it was interesting to see how people buckled down and focused on their jobs. Everyone from the pilots to the Secret Service were doing what they had trained to do.

Thanks for sharing this - a great read. I was just working in Chicago at the time, but this brought back a flood of memories. I can’t imagine the pressure that entire team was under that day, but this gives the readers a window into the day.

A little surprised they didn't move him aboard or that it wasn't up already.

Apparently, (by coincidence) an E-4B under the callsign “VENUS77" was spotted in the DC area after their training op was cancelled during the 9/11 attacks.

Fascinating read, thanks for posting that. It is crazy to think how difficult it was for them to communicate that recently. Now we take instant communication and constant data availability totally for granted. Hard to believe that only 15 years ago not even the president had access to internet while onboard Air Force One.

Thank you for posting that. Given the choices availabe to us for November 9th, I’ve never imagined that I might might feel nostalgic for GW Bush.

How fast would .94 Mach be?

That is humming right along. How fast depends on if you mean air or ground speed and if there is a head or tail wind. Basically, they were about as close to supersonic as you want to get in a 747.

I think one of the points the fighter pilots were making was the 747 was light so it took off like a rocket and got to altitude and speed way quicker than a standard airliner. I was on a delivery flight for a 737. Just a handful of people. Short field length takeoff and we climbed steep straight up to 41000 ft. The service ceiling for the aircraft and we were above most of the trafic. It was impressive.

I found a calculator on Google that said 620 mph at 40,000 feet. Close enough for my purposes.

Fascinating read, thanks for sharing. Understandably, I was a lot more interested in what the AF1 commander and other military pilots had to say. It’s nice to hear how focused they were on their job. And, that must have been one hell of a ride out of Florida. I’m already a mil-av geek, but it fills me with a sense of pride that we possess the assets to do the things the AF was able to do that day, and to know that it was done with such professionalism.

Yeah, they knew their mission and took care of it to the best of their abilities with limited guidance. Get out of dodge, find a safe place and then figure out a plan.

Really, people give W crap for his actions on the day, but he did as well as anyone could be expected. Many folks forget that the Secret Service has ultimate authority for his safety and at times like that he really doesn’t get to call the shots.

I liked the bits about what a 747 can do when it really wants to get up and go. They are amazing beasts.
